Hey Loves!
We are rounding the bases and heading home in this curriculum picks series. We’ve discussed language arts, math, science and now our focus for social studies: Economics and American Government.
At this point you may be thinking, “your kids are 4 and 6 not 14 and 16.” I know and trust me I get it. Here’s the thing, part of raising disciples is raising allies and part of raising allies is constantly educating them. It is important to us for our kids to understand how money works and how it can work for you or against you and how laws and governmental systems can help or harm.
I began learning this around James’ age and feel that with certain aids, tools and application methods, this information can be taught, retained and practiced at an elementary level. More importantly, it can be built upon for deeper understanding and application-this is the goal. To build a foundation for which their knowledge and action is built upon.
Now you’re probably thinking, “how m’am?” Here is the short answer: Books and dramatic play. Sounds simple enough right?
My plan is to pair books, short youtube videos and maybe even movies around
“Units”, if you will, delving into vocabulary, review and practice through dramatic play or a basic case study.
Economics will have the same base. Books, videos, vocabulary and review, plus some fun dramatic play with various “pop up” shops with our market stand.
I’ll be sure to take you along during my planning and execution of these measures and this will be a trial and error testing method, no doubt.
I’m probably way more excited than I should be about this BUT an excited teacher has the most eager-to-learn students, right?
You can find some good resources for American Government here and some economics resources here.
